Greece faces protests before crucial parliament vote


The unions shut down government services, halted public transport and disrupted flights. Schools were shut and many businesses were closed, while the streets of central Athens were virtually deserted.

Greek unions on Tuesday began a two-day agitation to protest against Prime Minister George Papandreou's new set of tough budget cuts worth 5.6 billion euros that are set to be taken up for debate by the parliament.

ADEDY, the public sector union representing half a million civil servants and GSEE, which represents 2 million private sector workers, are stepping up pressure before the parliament vote over the next couple of days.
