Researchers have found a potential new treatment for thousands of asthma patients who experience a 'late phase' of symptoms several hours after exposure to allergens, causing breathing difficulties which can last up to 24 hours.

In research on mice and rats, scientists from Imperial College London have now found evidence that the late asthmatic response happens because the allergen triggers sensory nerves in the airways.

These nerves activate reflexes, which trigger other nerves that release the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which causes the airways to narrow. If the findings translate to humans, it would mean that drugs that block acetylcholine - called anticholinergics - could be used to treat asthma patients that experience late phase responses following exposure to allergens.

"Many asthmatics have symptoms at night after exposure to allergens during the day, but until now we haven't understood how this late response is brought about," said Professor Maria Belvisi, from the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, who led the research.
"Our study in animals suggests that anticholinergic drugs might help to alleviate these symptoms, and this is supported by the recent clinical data. We are seeking funding to see if these findings are reproduced in proof of concept clinical studies in asthmatics."

The researchers hypothesised that sensory nerves were involved after observing that anaesthesia prevented the late asthmatic response in mice and rats. They succeeded in blocking the late asthmatic response using drugs that block different aspects of sensory nerve cell function, adding further evidence for this idea.

The study has been published in the journal Thorax.

Dengue assumes epidemic proportions in Orissa

Map of India showing location of Orissa

Even as the State government claims to be taking every possible step to contain the dengue outbreak, the situation seems to be slipping out of control. The outbreak has now spread to 16 of 30 districts in the State.
According to information from three government medical college hospitals, of the 124 blood samples tested in the hospitals, 29 tested positive for dengue.
“Out of 93 samples, 19 tested positive in the SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack while seven out of 22 samples in the MKCG Medical College Hospital, Berhampur and seven of nine samples in the VSS Medical College Hospital, Burla tested positive,” said a Health Department bulletin here on Saturday.
Ever since the outbreak, as many as 161 out of total 389 samples have tested positive.
Initially, the fever was confined to Angul, Sundargarh and a few more districts. However, by Saturday, it had spread to 16 districts creating panic among people and officials.
The districts where blood samples were found to be positive include Angul, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Khurda, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Kendrapara, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Jharsuguda and Rayagada.
Angul continued to be most affected as 15 new cases were detected in the district on Saturday.

BONELA blasts GUS over ARVs for foreign inmates

Speaking in Parliament, Matlhabaphiri defended government's stance not to provide foreign inmates with ARV drugs, saying it is costly to do so as inmates find such drugs unavailable in their home countries after returning there, which happens quite often.
However, BONELA maintains that there is lack of political will by the Botswana government regarding this issue.
The Director of BONELA, Uyapo Ndadi, said: "the comments by Matlhabaphiri are both careless and callous as they reflect not only the position of government on this population, but on all people living with HIV.  The response to HIV/AIDS calls for progressive leadership that will think outside the box. Clearly, there is need for transformational leadership if we are to overcome the challenges posed by the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Botswana and achieve our goal of zero new infections by 2016."
Ndadi said that earlier this year, the National AIDS Council was informed that a comprehensive feasibility study was being undertaken by the National AIDS Coordinating Agency (NACA), the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence and Security and other partners to inform HIV interventions targeting prisoners.
"As an organisation, we are now worried that perhaps this was lip-service as a decision has seemingly been made on the fate of HIV positive foreign inmates.
"In our opinion, the study would highlight the number of foreign prisoners in need of ARV treatment, as well as a computation of the costs involved in providing treatment of opportunistic infections (OI) vis-a-vis provision of ARVs, (considering that Botswana is using generic drugs that are even cheaper to procure) and the implications thereof," said Ndadi.
In the absence of such evidence, Ndadi said the Minister's assertion was uninformed, misleading and a mere fallacy.
"It costs about P180 to provide ARVs to an individual in a month, and clearly the benefits of saving a human life, preventing infection and re-infection of citizens overwhelms this paltry amount," Ndadi said.
BONELA said treating OIs, may prove more costly to Botswana as there will be a continuous need to treat the same or different OIs.  Further, BONELA said, treating OIs does not address HIV, which is the underlying factor as HIV will continue damaging the immune system of inmates in the absence of antiretroviral therapy (ART).
"Of note is the threat of tuberculosis (TB) in a prison setting.  Whilst treatment is provided for TB, the latter will be infectious prior to treatment as well as two weeks after commencement of the treatment.  Government is better off providing treatment to foreign inmates because once they get TB - which is an airborne disease - they will still be in a position to infect Batswana inmates.
Eventually, Government will end up treating the whole prison, instead of an individual, as many OIs are highly infectious," said Ndadi.
He said the argumen that some inmates originate from countries where there are no ARVs is fallacious.
"Which countries are those and who said their fortunes will not change?  Furthermore, inmates once out can fend for themselves.  It is better to be sent to your country fit and healthy than dead or terminally ill," the BONELA chief said.
In view of the above, BONELA questions the appointment of Botswana to the United Nations Human Rights Council if it can just look on whilst foreign prisoners waste away because of HIV while in Botswana prisons.
If indeed the concern is in relation to the cost, Botswana can engage external countries she has bilateral relations with through the joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), Southern African Development Community (SADC) and World Health Organisation (WHO) to provide treatment to save lives, whilst a viable solution is sought, BONELA said.
As a human rights organisation, BONELA said they find it baffling that a health official can be so insensitive to the plight of an HIV positive person in any setting, especially when the whole world is calling for human rights as the only approach to universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support.
This is because any HIV and AIDS initiative that is not deeply entrenched in human rights fundamentals will not succeed, said BONELA.
BONELA said there is evidence that a human rights approach to HIV/AIDS will reduce HIV transmission rates as it acknowledges the differences among human beings that make them vulnerable to HIV infection. Such interventions therefore, will ensure that attention in terms of prevention is afforded to those most at risk of contracting and transmitting HIV.

Why women have fewer heart attacks: Oestrogen protects against blocked arteries Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2025008/Why-women-fewer-heart-attacks-Oestrogen-protects-heart-disease.html#ixzz1UtVntlTB

The sex hormone oestrogen protects women from heart attacks and may explain why they are far less likely to be struck down than men, claim scientists.
Around one in five men in Britain die from a heart attack, compared to just one in seven women.

They have discovered that this naturally-occurring chemical helps stop blood cells sticking to the walls of arteries and forming potentially fatal blockages.

Researchers from Queen Mary at the University of London think their findings  may explain why women are far more likely to suffer heart attacks after the menopause, when their oestrogen levels decline.

Around one in five men in Britain die from a heart attack, compared to just one in seven women.

But while very few women suffer heart attacks before their 50s, the risk suddenly increases after the menopause when they are just as likely to be struck down than men.

Until recently experts have struggled to explain why younger women are less likely to develop heart disease and suffer heart attacks.

Now research published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology claims that the hormone oestrogen may protect them.

But experts say their findings do not necessarily mean that oestrogen could  ever be used in drugs to prevent heart disease.

Indian-origin doctor in UK charged with sexual assault

An Indian-origin doctor is facing charges before Britain's regulator, the General Medical Council, of assaulting patients sexually while working as a anaesthetist at a clinic in Manchester.

Narendra Sharma abused and molested patients during abortions, according to co-workers who testified during the hearing.

The charge against Sharma was that while being employed  at the Marie Stopes (International) Clinic in Manchester, Sharma acted toward three patients in a manner that was indecent and sexually motivated and thereby abused his professional position.

He allegedly used the hands of sedated patients to perform obscene acts on himself during abortion procedures.

Dr. Sharma faced an allegation of misconduct after two medical workers gave statements against him. One staff member said she saw Sharma take a woman's left hand and move it under the operating table during an abortion procedure.

Healthcare workers also made allegations against the doctor.

The hearing is going on, and Sharma's record on the GMC register shows that he is suspended. Sharma gained his medical qualifications from Poona University in 1980.

Waxing London - Perfect Legs for Beauty and Style

Take the plunge and throw away your razors and try waxing your legs instead. Here are some tips to make sure you get the best most beautiful result, first time. Try leg waxing London - style for a smooth elegant result.

First of all, the best way to check that you won't have an allergic reaction to the wax strips is to remember to do a test strip before you do a larger area. Some people, especially those with sensitive skin, should read the instructions that come with your chosen package of wax strips carefully and check the list of ingredients used to manufacture the strips. Just in case you are allergic to any of the chemicals in the wax. Normally after applying a test strip you should wait at least 24 hours before going ahead so you can satisfy yourself that there'll be no untoward reaction with your skin.

Cow itch or kaj kujli. The pod is covered by h...
Waxing your legs, or any other part of your body, will be slightly painful. This is because the very physical act of pulling the wax strips off once they've adhered to the hair will sting a bit. If you've got a low pain threshold, try to minimise the pain by washing the area you're going to wax very thoroughly before you apply the wax strips. This means the adhesive works properly as any natural oils left on your skin will stop the strips sticking well and therefore prevent the whole waxing process from working to its full potential. The wax strip instructions will tell you to pull the strips off your skin immediately to prevent too much of the wax transferring to your skin. However warming the strips up a bit before you apply them will help this process. Whip the strips off your skin as fast as you can to minimise the painful moment. Waxing instead of shaving or using depilatory cream, has the advantage of encouraging finer growth of your hair and a longer lasting smooth look because the hair is pulled out from the root itself and not just cut above the skin level. You can buy reusable strips that will last five or six times or disposable strips. Hold your skin taut as you pull the strip off your skin to experience less pain as the hair is removed. Re-growth normally appears after 3-6 weeks but sometimes after the first waxing a few hairs may have been missed if they were too short to start with. Continued waxing will gradually capture these rogue hairs too and leave a lovely smooth looking skin. Professional beauty clinics offer a variety of waxing services and also different types of wax, from honey, tea tree, or hot waxes for different areas of your body.

Combat Dry Skin Around Eyes With Natural Applications

Dry skin beneath eyes, around the mouth and on the forehead is a frustrating problem for millions of people.  Because the skin of the face is particularly sensitive, finding a product that can address the signs of aging like dryness, wrinkles and puffiness, without harming the skin itself can be a difficult task.  And yet, with the addition of many all natural products on the market, it doesn't have to be.

While many products claim to be all natural, in fact most contain synthetic ingredients and harsh chemicals.  When it comes to treating dry skin around eyes and elsewhere on the face, it is vital that you avoid these kinds of artificial ingredients as they can do more damage than good.   Only products that contain at least 50% natural, plant based ingredients can truly be considered all natural and only these products will be safe and effective for your skin.

Important ingredients to look for in a lotion meant to treat dry skin beneath eyes include CoenzymeQ10, babassu, homeo age, vitamin E and active manuka honey.   In the right combination, these natural compounds will work together to rid the body of harmful toxins, restore elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

CoezymeQ10, Vitamin E and other natural antioxidants are an important and exciting new addition to skin care products.  These compounds work to rid the body of harmful free radicals, helping skin to heal from the inside out.   Natural products that contain antioxidants not only address dry skin around eyes but help to reduce other signs of aging and can leave you feeling better as well as looking better.

Other organic ingredients can work to promote collagen growth, smooth rough skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and heal dry skin beneath eyes.  Active manuka honey contains enzymes that rejuvenate the skin, restoring a youthful appearance.  Babassu is a light natural wax that can gently moisturize dry skin and create a protective barrier to keep out irritants.

Another natural ingredient that is particularly important in treating dry skin around eyes and on the face is homeo age, an extract made from Canadian algae.  This powerful compound promotes cell growth, helping to smooth and soften dry skin and lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Before choosing any product, especially one to address dry skin beneath eyes and on the face, thoroughly examine the list of ingredients and be sure to carefully read through all of the manufacturer's information.  Also check to see if there is a full money back guarantee included since not every product will work the same for every individual.

The eyes are said to be the gateway to the soul so finding the safest, gentlest and healthiest product to treat the skin around the eyes can be the most important decision you'll ever make.  Take the extra time to find the right product and your eyes will be telling a whole new story, with a much happier ending!

How Black Women Can Eliminate Hair, Neck, and Razor Bumps

Increasingly, women are growing more facial hairs and resorting to shaving their faces.  As a consequence, women, especially Black women, experience ingrown hairs, neck bumps, and razor bumps. For women, such bumps can be especially unsightly, producing significant scarring and discoloration. Here are a few tips on preventing or reducing your hair bumps and ingrown hairs:

How to Eliminate Black Women's Hair Bumps- Step #1: Stop Using a Razor. Okay, so this is the last thing you wanted to hear. However, the only 100% effective remedy against ingrown hairs and razor bumps is to stop shaving.

How to Eliminate Black Women's Hair Bumps- Step #2:Try to have your face or targeted area waxed to remove unwanted hairs.  See a professionally licensed beautician or spa specialist and have him or her wax your face. Make sure you look into whether they have natural waxing procedures, such as beeswax or honey. These are better alternatives for your skin and will reduce your chance for skin discomfort and irritation after the waxing treatment. Also, ask if there is some sort of natural moisturizer and hair bump prevention solution that they will apply following your wax. The application of these two items will reduce skin eruptions, kill bacteria, and soothe your face.  If they say they do not offer such items, bring your own. Beauty 4 Ashes makes a wonderful, 100% natural Hair bump solution that can be applied after facial waxes and will reduce existing hair bumps and prevent bikini, chin, and hair bumps in the future. You can order from Beauty 4 Ashes Christian Co's online store wwwdiscoverb4acom. Aloe Vera Gel is also a great natural moisturizer to use following a wax. You can find a quality brand at your local whole foods store or VitaminShoppe.

How to Eliminate Black Women's Hair Bumps- Step #3: Try Wax at home or use a depilatory cream made to remove your specific hair. If you are really savvy, you can do your own waxing. But, I have discovered that this is often a mess. Depilatory creams, although better than shaving, are not a top choice due to their chemical composition. So why even recommend these? Because they are still worthy of consideration.
Woman shaving her pubic hair

How to Eliminate Black Women's Hair Bumps- Step #4: Make sure your body is getting the nutrients it needs to fight the bacteria that cause hair bumps.  Take Flax Oil to flush your system. Daily take Vitamin C to boost your immune system. This will help.

How to Eliminate Black Women's Hair Bumps- Step #5: If you must shave, be sure to do it right. Improper techniques will only cause more bumps. Thus, you should shave in the same manner your hair grows. Cleanse the area you are about to shave with an anti-bacterial soap, such as Safeguard (synthentic) or Beauty 4 Ashes HBD Cleanser (all natural). There is a formula of Safeguard that actually includes Aloe Vera that may be more helpful. However, it is not as affective as Beauty 4 Ashes HBD Cleanser, which contains essential oil that kill hair bump causing bacteria.

How to Eliminate Black Women's Hair Bumps- Step #6: Clean all your razors with hot water and alcohol before and after use. Discard al razors after being used for one week.

How to Eliminate Black Women's Hair Bumps- Step #7:Do not place heavy makeup on your hair bumps. This will only cause more skin irritation, whether the makeup is noncomedogenic or not.

Natural rugs are a popular choice for many homeowners these days. We all know the state of the environment and how important the choices are that we make when choosing products and materials for our homes. If you are looking for an area rug for your home decor, I highly recommend selecting natural rugs because they cause no harm to the environment and are most certainly a safer choice for you and your family.

Here are some important benefits of natural rugs.

Natural rugs are made from 100% renewable resources, meaning that the materials can be replaced without a lot of strain on the environment. These materials are environmentally friendly, sustainable and some even biodegradable.

Natural rugs do not emit any off gassing of unhealthy chemicals like manufactured materials do. A new area rug may give off a distinct smell when first laid out but this is just the natural scent of the fibers and this will dissipate usually within a few hours.

Natural fiber rugs are extremely enduring and most can withstand a lot of stress from high traffic areas.

They are fire resistant, anti-static and naturally sound absorbing because of the natural molecular structure of the fibers.

Natural rugs are stain resistant and easy to maintain but excessive exposure to water can be damaging to a lot of the natural fibers.

There are numerous weaves, textures and colors to choose from.

Natural rug fibers are woven together with other natural fibers to give the rug the blended benefits of each specific fiber.

The Dirty Truth On Dry Skin Care Revealed That The Experts Don't Want You To Know

Rotating image of Optical Coherence Tomography...

Over many decades, dry skin lotions by Unilever and Vaseline were what we used and trusted for dry skin care. But, the results have been the opposite. Dry itchy skin has not been cured, but in fact worsened. This article shall give you the shocking truths based on scientific evidence.

We apply dry skin lotions and creams to get a healthy skin, and not to suffer health problems and premature skin aging. The problem with a majority of the dry skin lotions and creams is that they use mineral oils as an active ingredient. It is used in these forms - petrolatum, liquid paraffin and paraffin wax.

These are by products of petroleum and are cheaply available. But, they are the least compatible with the human natural oils (sebum). Sebum gives our skin protection from infections and prevents the skin from cracking.
Close up picture of Keegans Ass(San Diego Zoo,...

Sebum is produced by the Sebaceous glands. If it is produced too much, it leads to excessive oiliness and acne breakouts. If it is produced very less, then it leads to skin dryness - which is the precursor to cracking, flaking, wrinkles, fine lines, irritating, itching and other skin problems.

Petrolatum only artificially moisturizes the skin. It does not penetrate the skin, it just evaporates in a little while. So, the mineral oil based moisturizers don't solve the problem of dry itchy skin, but only make the matters worse.

This is very different to natural plant based oils. They are very similar to the sebum that our body produces naturally and so are easily absorbed. They heal the skin from within and do not create a situation where some part of the skin is too oily while the other parts are dry.
This is a hematoxylin and eosin stained slide ...

Natural moisturizing oils like avocado oil, macadamia oil, grapeseed oil and olive oil work amazingly well for curing dry itchy skin. Jojoba oil is like a natural wax and it resembles the sebum very well. It balances the production of sebum too.

This way such amazing natural oils not only perform effective dry skin care, but they also give wonderful anti aging and skin rejuvenation effects. A well moisturized skin is less prone to wrinkles, fine lines and skin aging symptoms.

Functional keratin is another indispensable protein that you should look for. It is present in great quantity in Cynergy TK, which is a cutting edge natural ingredient pioneered in New Zealand. Basically, keratin is a vital structural protein found in our skin, which plays a vital role in maintaining skin youth and vitality.

Functional keratin contains protein and zinc complexes which penetrate deep down the skin and help not only in repairing of the damaged skin cells, but also regrowth of new ones. Research has shown that it cures dry itchy skin symptoms that are caused by detergent related dermatitis.

Cynergy TK locks in the vital moisture balance in the skin and improves skin's moisture retention and elasticity. It is one of the most effective ingredients developed in the latest scientific developments for dry skin care and anti aging.

Waxing Sugaring for Hair Removal: Four Differences

Distribution of hair on female and male body

Many choose waxing sugaring solutions to get rid of unwanted body hair as they are easy to buy, inexpensive, and convenient to use in your own home.

In view of the differences with each person when it comes to skin sensitivity, rate of hair growth, and the texture of the hair,. a choice has to be made between waxing and sugaring. As there are main differences it is good to become aware of the pros and cons so you can decide which will be your preferred hair removal method.

Here are 4 main differences between waxing and sugaring:

1. What Sticks

Body wax sticks to the hair and the skin. So when the wax or wax strip is pulled off it takes a layer of skin with it including dead skin cells. This explains why the skin often feels silky smooth after a waxing session.

The downside is the skin can be sensitive and react. An ice cube can be effective afterwards in calming distressed skin or a specially purchased soothing cream can do the same. For many though, the redness and any bumps that appear will go within a short time.

By contrast, sugaring sticks mainly to the hair and while it can still sting it tends to be less painful than waxing. The skin also may still be sensitive and red afterwards but the effects are generally less severe than with waxing.
Androgensensibilitaet

2. The Temperature

Body waxing can come in hot or cold versions. Hot waxes are heated just above a person's body temperature so they trap the hairs when they cool into a stiffer mixture. One precaution you need to be aware of is to test a very small part of the skin first to make sure the temperature is not too hot if the wax is overheated.

Strips coated with cold wax are also available so these are simply pressed onto the skin firmly and pulled back sharply removing the hair.

Sugaring on the other hand involves a sugar paste either slightly warmed or used at room temperature, although many prefer to warm the paste. It is spread over the skin thinly in the direction the hair is growing and then ripped off quickly to remove the hair by the root.

As hot sugar can burn, if the sugaring paste is warmed slightly, care must be taken to make sure it doesn't become hot and cause skin damage.

3. The Composition

Waxing compositions contain a variety of chemicals, some of which can be a little harsh on the skin if used regularly. Many waxing products nowadays however, also contain natural ingredients which soothe and help heal the skin.

Sugaring pastes are completely natural and more gentle on the skin. Some commercial products contain gum Arabic and citric acid to make the process of pulling hair out by the root easier.

4. The Clean Up

As waxing products are generally petroleum based, they can be a little messy to clean up. You can get after waxing solutions which are effective in removing the wax residue from the skin.

Sugar paste is easily cleaned off with water, although many follow up with another solution such as tea tree oil which acts as an antibacterial agent.

Waxing sugaring products command a huge market. You will notice a large variety from your local pharmacy or supermarket. It is wise to read over the instructions, examine the list of ingredients, and experiment. Waxing or Sugaring? Decide which method suits you best after trying them both for a while?
